Today is a Day of Reflection across the UK which commemorates the fifth anniversary of the pandemic. It is an opportunity to come together to remember those who lost their lives since the pandemic began and to honour the tireless work and acts of kindness which were shown. During this time, Fawkham residents came together – virtually – as a community. People displayed colourful pictures of rainbows in their windows, came out to their doorstops at 8pm on a Thursday to clap for NHS and other key workers, enjoyed painting, hiding, finding and residing Fawkham Rocks, visited the Rising Sun Inn’s pop up “village shop” and children planted sunflower seeds. A few days before the first lockdown started, members of Fawkham Parish Council delivered a note to all houses in Fawkham offering help to those who could not leave their homes and asking for volunteers to help collect food and prescriptions. Many residents joined the group set up by FPC, and others helped their neighbours informally too. Some of these activities were captured by resident photographer Estelle Thompson and are shown in this gallery: https://fawkhamparishcouncil.gov.uk/galleries/coronavirus-lockdown-2020/
During the pandemic, “Fawkham Rocks” became very popular, with people painting rocks and leaving them for others to find on their walks around the Parish. Within a couple of months, well over one hundred rocks had been painted and hidden in woods, on stiles, besides footpaths, on benches, by gates and on trees. People of all ages enjoyed painting them and discovering them on their daily walks around the village, with many posting their finds on the Fawkham Community Facebook Group.
Fawky the snake and The Hungry Caterpillar aka Colin paid us a visit in May and June 2020, and their bodies grew as people added stones.
You can see some of them here: https://fawkhamparishcouncil.gov.uk/fawkham-rocks/
Where are all the Fawkham rocks now? If you have or find some, or want to paint some new ones, please share them on the Fawkham Community Facebook Group.
