Fawkham Parish Signs

As many of you know, the Parish sign on Baldwins Green was sadly demolished by a HGV in September. The sign was created to mark the Queen’s Silver Jubilee and had been in place in 1978. We are in the process of making an insurance claim, as well as looking into options for replacing it. We think it would be good to take the opportunity to have a slightly larger sign made in relief, with a three dimensional look. There are a few specialist businesses which make these village signs, and some examples are shown below.

We are likely to keep elements of the current design, details of which are below:

  • The head scroll bears the word Fawkham, supported on the left by oak leaves and on the right by seven acorns, indicating our inclusion in the District of Sevenoaks.
  • On the left panel is the de Faukeham coat of arms, depicted in a stained glass window in St Mary’s church.
  • The right hand panel shows the White Horse of Kent on a red background, to indicate our inclusion in the County of Kent.
  • The two panels are divided by a vertical green line hatched in white. This represents the Green Belt.
  • The blue wavy line on a silver background below the white horse is a visual pun on the watercourse which flows down Valley Road on a regular basis!
  • The Latin inscription Regnat Populus means “Let the People Rule”.

What do you think of these design elements?

However, the current design doesn’t include features of Fawkham which those who live here value, and so we are thinking about including some. For example, St Mary’s church, along with some trees and bluebells to reflect that the Parish has many areas of woodland. What do you think? Do you have any other ideas to include in the design which you would like us to consider? If so, please email: fawkhampc@gmail.com.

We also intend to the replace the sign on the village green outside the Rising Sun at the same time, as its condition has been deteriorating in recent years. We will use some CIL funds to pay for these, alongside the insurance claim. CIL is Community Infrastructure Levy funds received from development in the Parish, which can only be spent on items of community infrastructure.

We are interested to hear your thoughts on the design, so please let us know.
